Hot Off the Press: Three New Linear Choice Sires

Publish date: 6.25.24

This blog is dedicated to updating you on the latest new releases to St Jacobs’ Linear Choice. While originally intended to provide a solution to commercial dairy producers, we have seen Linear Choice sires be used by a wide range of customer types. Linear Choice sires are handpicked to create balanced cows, so you can expect these right-side linear sires to produce moderately sized, healthy, and productive cows. This program embodies where FORM MEETS FUNCTION.

We understand that every farm is unique, with distinct wants and challenges. That is why we aim to have an offering that fits a variety of operational goals to ensure you have the genetics to help you build the future herd you need. Next, we will delve into the newest additions to the Linear Choice program and explain how these new releases can elevate your herd’s performance.

94HO21403 YAGER

With over ton pounds of MILK on his genomic information, 94HO21403 YAGER is a popular bull to include in the St Jacobs lineup. He combines extreme production with the right-hand linear that Linear Choice sires are known for. Not to mention, he is A2/A2 and over 2 for PTAT.

YAGER daughters will be balanced, open ribbed, and have nearly perfect rump angle, leg set, and teat size. St Jacobs Brand Manager, Brian Behnke mentions that he likes the fact that YAGER who is a 2000-pound MILK bull is also a plus 1.5 CCR

His cow family is stacked with great sires. His sire is Figaro who is a Parfect son from the Raven family, and his dam is a Taos who is a daughter-proven Renegade son. YAGER is line-bred for Renegade, a bull known for making the Linear Choice kind.

94HO21480 HERRERA

94HO21480 HERRERA is an intriguing young bull in the Linear Choice offering. HERRERA is sired by the high-production bull, Venmo, and is the son of a MENDEL-P daughter who is a sister to the popular Linear Choice sire, HEXAGON

There are many one-name cows in HERRERA’s pedigree. His second dam is an ACURA daughter who has numerous sons in the ABS lineup, including HONDO. The 4th dam is Habitan EX 90, the most popular daughter of the famous bull, Delta. The 6th dam is Halo VG 88, the Holstein International Global Cow of the Year! And that all leads back to DELLIA EX 95, the world-famous brood cow and dam of St. Jacobs sire, DUNDEE.

HERRERA is right-side linear with no extremes, is moderate stature with positive strength and width, and has a big open rib. The HERRERA daughters will have a slight slope to their rumps and a bit of set to their hock—the making of cows who will be mobile and trouble-free. Their udders will be capacious with teats that are under the quarters. HERREA is 1900 pounds for MILK with positive components and is A2/A2.

Behnke says this about HERRERA, “When imagining what a HERRERA milking daughter will be, I picture walking down a lineup of young cows and seeing a group of wide-uddered cows who milk like crazy, are easy to get the machine on, and ones you won’t be able to see their head because it’s buried in the feed bunk.”

94HO21604 SPARK-P

This next new release to the Linear Choice sire lineup is a balanced polled bull whose name is 94HO21604 SPARK-P. Sired by MENDEL-P and from a VG Renegade daughter who comes from the same family that the great Regancrest-PR Barbie EX 92 came from.

SPARK-P will make long-lived cows that are trouble-free. He is over 1000 milk with positive components. He has good health traits, offers respectable Productive Life (PL) and Livability indexes, and is right-side linear with near ideal rump angle and leg set. SPARK-P offers positive DPR and is A2/A2.

SPARK-P will make cows who are dairy-boned and will have well-attached mammary systems. He should be a great mating on those cows whose rear teats are too close.

“When looking for a bull to make long-lived, productive cows, look to SPARK-P to do just that. He has the health trait, PL, and Livability numbers in combination with the linear to make moderate stature, dairy-boned, quality cows with no extremes that lead to cows who last for years,” Behnke says.
