What are polled genetics?

Polled sire, Estate-PP.

Polled genetics are increasingly growing in popularity and refer to the natural inheritance of the polled gene, resulting in cattle that are born without horns. This trait is dominant, meaning that only one parent needs to carry the gene for the offspring to have the genetic potential to be hornless.

This genetic trait is gaining popularity due to its many benefits, including enhanced animal welfare and reduced labour for dehorning.

Types of Polled Sires

There are two different types of polled sires, heterozygous (P) and homozygous (PP).

  • Heterozygous Polled (P): These sires carry one copy of the polled gene. As a result, 50% of their offspring will be polled.
  • Homozygous Polled (PP): These sires carry two copies of the polled gene, ensuring that 100% of their offspring will be born without horns.

When searching through sire directories, you’ll notice that some bull names contain (P) or (PP). This indicates whether the particular sire is heterozygous or homozygous for the polled gene, helping you make more informed breeding decisions.

Polled vs. Horned Genetics: Is there a difference?

Some farmers might wonder if polled genetics are as good as horned genetics. At Genus ABS, we’re pioneers in genetic innovation, and we’re proud to offer superior polled genetics that are of equal calibre to our industry leading horned genetics.

What are farmers saying about polled genetics?

Tom Dodgson, based in Yorkshire, has been a long-standing Genus ABS customer for over 30 years and has been using both Sexcel® sexed dairy genetics and NuEra™ Beef Genetics  as part of his sexed and beef strategy.

Tom Dodgson and Breeding Advisor, Colin Lucas discussing polled genetics.

Since adopting a sexed and beef strategy, the fertility on Tom’s farm has improved year-on-year and currently has a pregnancy rate of 27 and submission rate of 68.

Having started incorporating polled genetics into his herd a few years ago, Tom is working towards a fully polled herd, without compromising on the performance of his animals.

He explained: “As long as the genetics are not compromised and the bulls run on my Custom Index, using Homozygous Polled is 100% the right thing to do. Anything that stops stress on young calves is a great innovation.

“We are continuing to make massive progress on health traits, kilos of fat and protein. Why would we not do the same with polled?”

By adopting Genus ABS’ polled genetics, Tom’s working towards a fully polled herd without compromising on performance.
